What are the Advantages to Steel Frame Construction?

Updated: Mar 12, 2022

One of the long standing dilemmas in the construction world is concerning the method of steel frame construction and its effectiveness compared to the other construction methods out there.

When choosing construction materials, steel is often the first pick for many architects. But compared to other materials such as wood or concrete, how does steel stack up?

Steel framing is commonly chosen for simple structures like warehouses, garages and high-rise buildings. The reason for this is steel’s strength and flexibility. Steel is easy to maintain and doesn’t run the risks of pests or damage from moisture like wood and concrete. In taller buildings, steel also allows for just enough flex to contend with high winds (and potentially even earthquakes in some parts of the country).

Are Steel frame construction methods more reliable?

Speaking about steel frame construction details, much like we stated above, in the past, steel framing was primarily used for large and simpler structures.

As we stated above, constructing with steel is an attractive choice for anyone looking to build large, simple structures that stand the test of time.

Historically, steel was used in the construction of agricultural buildings, warehouses and especially skyscrapers. Today, we’re also seeing steel make appearances in residential neighborhoods and apartment buildings.

It has become a prerequisite in every stage of the building process, from floor to roofing, for different projects, and there are more than a few reasons for it, but the most important one is the versatility of the core material – steel.

Setting a steel frame inside a building provides it with a sturdy skeleton that the rest of the construction sits on top of. It’s perfect for ensuring the structure will endure heavy use and the passage of time.

What are the principal advantages of steel framing in construction

Compared to wood, brick and concrete structures, steel framing has several distinct advantages. If your construction is simple, rectangular or tall, you can’t go wrong with picking a reliable steel frame. Not only will you save on maintenance, you’ll save on construction time and labor as well.

Best of all, steel frames are entirely recyclable. When a steel building is torn down, the metal can be melted down and reused in future structures. When we said steel was long lasting, we meant it!
